Father’s Day is this weekend and we always love an excuse to celebrate the wonderful parental figures and caregivers who give their very best to helping raise wonderful little ones!

Here are some fun family ideas for celebrating Dad for Father’s Day in Chicago this year:

1. Go for a professional mini photo shoot with the family

This can be a great idea as either a gift or a planned event to mark the occasion on the day, but family photos are always a fun way to celebrate a happy family. Get dressed in matching clothes and go to a studio, or hire a local photographer (or even a high school or college photography student to let them build their portfolio) and do a shoot on-location at some of your favorite spots. One way or another, it will be a memorable occasion for sure – and you’ll have the pics to prove it happened!

2. Have a barbecue

Who doesn’t like an excuse to fire up the ol’ grill? Grab the family and head to the backyard or park and bring some burgers, steaks, brats, whatever Dad wants to celebrate his special day. For a gift to show him how much you love and appreciate him, it’s a great chance to get him a fun apron or goofy chef’s hat, or the updated, upgraded barbecue tool or gadget he’s been wanting. Make sure he has his favorite cold beverage to bring along with him, too!

3. Or Go Ape at a Father’s Day BBQ at the Brookfield Zoo

Everyone loves to eat a special thing on their special day! Moms get brunch at the zoo, dads get barbecues. Come for a delicious Father’s Day barbeque and dive in to the all-you-can-eat summertime buffet, enjoy the interactive DJ, cash bar service and an animal-filled stroll at Pavilion Park Brookfield Zoo. $43.95 for adults, $33.95 for kids ages 3-11, and free for 2 and under, but you’ll need to make a reservation due to limited seating so be sure to call to book your spot!

4. Go for a walking tour on the Bloomingdale Trail

On Sunday, June 17, from 10:00am-11:15am, volunteer docents from The Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail will guide walkers for a West End Tour of the Bloomingdale Trail, starting atop the trail near the bicycle racks between Ridgeway and Lawndale Avenues. Tours will cover things such as the trail’s design, how the trail came to be, the Bloomingdale Line and Chicago railroad history, east and/or west Bloomingdale Trail walk highlights, and answer any questions you have about the Bloomingdale Trail and The 606. Be sure to RSVP by email to John Paige at j.paige@comcast.net if you want to go!

However you choose to celebrate, we hope you have a very Happy Father’s Day!
