Fun February Events to Do with Kids in Chicago

February is a great month for fun things to do in Chicago with kids. From crafts and activities to celebrate nature, to card-making and mosaic hearts, to a fun show with entertainer Randy Kaplan, there are lots of fun family activities to do with the kids in the city this month.

Here are details for some of the fun February events in Chicago to enjoy with the family:

1. February 4 – Nature Discovery Day

From 10am-12pm at the Heller Nature Center in Highland Park, you can take the kids to tour their nature classrooms, do some crafts together that they can take home after their visit, learn about some of the science of nature, see live animals, even go sledding or cross-country skiing. Wrap up your visit with marshmallow roasting around a campfire. This is the nature center’s 8th annual Nature Discovery Day. No pre-registration is needed, but do be aware that some activities may vary and may be weather-dependent. All ages welcome, and admission is free.

2. February 12 – Valentine’s Heart Mosaics, Card making, and Tasty Treats at Unicoi Art Studio

Stop on into the Unicoi Art Studio anytime between 4-6pm to pitch in on the heart mosaic project. You can make cards, eat treats, and make a unique valentine with their handmade grout and mosaic materials. The project will take up to about half an hour so make sure to budget your time accordingly. Ages 2 1/2 and up are welcome, and the cost is $20 per heart.

3. February 25 – Polar Adventure Days at Northerly Island

From noon to 4p, come by Northerly Island to celebrate their 12th annual Polar Adventure Days and see live animals, make nature-inspired crafts, and do winter activities such as touring the new Northerly Island Natural Area while it wears its winter clothes, see birds of prey from Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation, as well as Siberian huskies, wolves, and other live animals up close and personal, and sip hot cocoa as you walk across the prairie. Be sure to dress warm and ready for the weather because events will be going on both inside the visitor center as well as outdoors, and you don’t want your little one to miss out on any of the fun! All ages are welcome, cost is free. Limited parking available for $3.

4. February 25 – Randy Kaplan Live! at Bub City

Come to Bub City from 11a-noon to see the popular entertainer Randy Kaplan perform live. NEW YORK magazine raved that “Randy Kaplan is one of those happy-they-exist people you can’t quite tell is playing kids’ music. And yet he is.” Randy mixes comedic storytelling with a unique flavor of American roots music and has been named by PEOPLE magazine, NPR, and The Nashville Blues Society as one of the top family entertainers in the country. He has five full-length CDs that are not just for kids, and his sixth will come out just a week before this show (entitled “Trippin’ Round the Mitten”). Show is appropriate for all ages, and is free!
