A classic Tolkien tale is coming to the stage in the Second City next month, allowing families with children in kindergarten in Chicago to follow the adventures of Bilbo Baggins.
The Greenhouse Theater Center has announced the performance dates for The Hobbit, which will take the stage soon and allow parents and their young ones to grow their imagination. The CGI-less performance is focused more on theatrical imagination, following Bilbo into the Misty Mountains to discover treasure and encounter orcs and dragons.
The performance will use the original score from The Hobbit, and the roles will be played by a small acting ensemble. The performance has been adapted for the stage by Greg Banks, with the music being composed by Thomas Johnson. Students at Kids’ Work Chicago Riverview can become inspired by the performance, potentially discovering an interest in the fantasy genre and performing arts while bonding with their parents.
Randy White, the YPT (Young People’s Theatre of Chicago) Artistic Director, will be directing the performance, and the show is expected to run for 90 minutes. It has been described as “a triumph of storytelling” by the Milwaukee Journal. The lesson in the story is that anyone can change the course of significant events.
The Greenhouse Theater Center, which is located on North Lincoln Avenue in Chicago, will be hosting the performance, which is set to premiere on Saturday, February 7, at 11:00 AM. Ticket prices vary by time and can be purchased online. Adult tickets start at $36.50, and children’s tickets are $24.50.
