Earlier this year, a study released its findings related to the mental health outcomes of children, particularly those living in urban areas, after attending summer camp.

The study, conducted by several psychologists, took a closer look at the mental health benefits of time spent in a nature-based summer camp by young ones who live in urban centers like Chicago, providing a way for area parents to help their children grow independently.

The study’s research has concluded that children in such settings gain benefits for their behavioral and psychological health.

Based on their findings, the psychologists believe that the impact of spending time in nature with other children can foster social connections and enhance well-being, with the effects being even more pronounced in children from certain groups.

The study gathered results by having 27 children from Ottawa, Canada, fill out a survey upon arrival on the first and last days of a week-long camp experience. The survey inquired about each child’s loneliness, outlook, and overall emotional state. The results showed small to medium-sized gains in each category, which would be expected to also apply to children taking part in summer camp in Chicago.

Other primary takeaways from the study are the importance of green space and nature for children’s wellness. Finding time to enjoy time at the parks and natural spaces near Kids’ Work Chicago Riverview could potentially lead to better health and happiness outcomes for the city’s youth, resulting in the possibility of improved behavioral outcomes that could lead to a greater chance of well-being in the future.
