Children’s fishing derby to spark friendly competition in Chicago

About Us

Chicago children who are looking for a fun way to spend quality time outdoors this summer are in luck, as a fishing derby is coming to the Chicagoland area.

The Kids’ Fishing Derby is coming to the Hidden Oaks Nature Center in nearby Bolingbrook in a few weeks, giving children in Chicago a memorable and competitive way to connect with nature and spend time outdoors this summer.

The derby is open to children as young as five years old, with registered children being placed into competitive brackets based on their age. It offers a fun outdoor experience parents can share with their children after their graduation from the preschool program at Kids’ Work Chicago Riverview.

Attendees can expect a positive and high-energy setting where first-time fishers can learn the essential skills and safety tips for a memorable experience. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the angler who catches the largest fish in their age group. These prizes could make for an impressive story and presentation for Show-and-Tell for little ones getting ready to start kindergarten in Chicago.

Each child will receive a free container of nightcrawlers for baiting their hooks. Every registered child will also receive commemorative goodies and treats to snack on. The age groups are five-eight years old, nine-12 years old, and 13-15 years old. Organizers have arranged for two separate sessions, with the first starting at 7:00 AM and the second beginning at 9:30 AM.

Hidden Oaks Nature Center in nearby Bolingbrook will host the Kids’ Fishing Derby, which is set for next Saturday, June 27. Parents can get their little ones registered by calling the organizers or reaching out via their website, and registration is free of charge.
