Things to Do with Kids in Chicago This May

May Day, May Day! The great month of May is on its way, the month that finishes the seasonal transition from Spring to Summer. Celebrate May and the changing seasons with your family at some of these great things to do with the kids in Chicago this May!

1. Celebrate some Polish history at the Polish Constitution Day Parade
May 5

Take the kids to watch the Polish Constitution Day Parade on Columbus from Balbo to Monroe, commemorating Poland being the first country in Europe to become a constitutional democracy on May 3, 1791. The free parade begins at 11:30 a.m.

2. Dine outside as a family at the Food Truck Social at Lincoln Park
May 19

Chicago’s best food trucks are often seen scattered around the city, but on May 19 you can take the kids and go sample a whole variety of them in one visit, plus get after-hours access to the Lincoln Park Zoo! Cost is $10 for the public or $8 for members, 6:30 p.m.

3. Partake in the Mole de Mayo
May 25–27

If you love mole, local bands and DJs, and/or some colorful Mexican wrestling in colorful costumes, head on over with the family to the Mole de Mayo at Ashland and 18th Street. $5 donation

4. Bring the kids to the Kids and Kites Festival
May 5

Cricket Hill in Lincoln Park will host a family-friendly, free, outdoor celebration of spring with a favorite family pastime – flying kites! Have a go at flying free paper kites, or purchase a fancy kite from one of the vendors.

5. Go to the Skokie Festival of Cultures
May 19-20

Skokie’s annual global culture festival has attendees snacking on ethnic food and sipping beer from around the world. Enjoy music, dance, art and a host of games at this family-friendly fest in one of Chicago’s nearest suburbs.

6. Go Learn about “The Science Behind Pixar”
May 24, 2018 – January 6, 2019

WALL-E, Nemo, Buzz Lightyear, and Mike Wazowski will be making an appearance at the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park for “The Science Behind Pixar”, which informs kids and adults alike about the science and technology of the artist and computer scientists’ techniques in making classic family films like WALL-E, Toy Story, and Finding Nemo come to life on the big screen.

7. Enjoy some family theater and watch The Emperor’s New Clothes play
May 5 – 12

The family favorite “The Emperor’s New Clothes” comes to life at Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. Bring the family to watch the story of the gullible king who buys “magical clothes” and the boy who teaches him a life lesson about outward appearance.

8. Eat some wings at the Chicken Wings Festival
May 6

Kids 10+ and adults can get their fill of chicken wings at UIC Pavilion when a number of restaurants face off for WingFest’s title of “Best of Fest”. A ticket gets you unlimited samples.

9. Treat Mom to Mother’s Day Brunch at the Zoo
May 13

Bring the kids to celebrate Mom! A free mimosa and live music awaits moms at the Mother’s Day Brunch buffet at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Make a reservation and come be celebrated!
